If you're planning a new patio, walkway, or driveway in Oakland or the East Bay, you'll run into the same decision almost everyone does: pavers or poured concrete? Cost: concrete wins upfront
There's no getting around it — poured concrete is cheaper to install than pavers. Poured concrete in the Bay Area typically runs $8–$18 per square foot installed (basic broom finish at the low end, stamped or decorative at the high end). Pavers typically run $20–$35 per square foot installed, depending on the material and site prep. So on day-one price, concrete wins — but the day-one price isn't the whole story, especially here in the East Bay.
Durability: pavers win, and it's not close
Much of the East Bay sits on expansive clay soil that swells when wet and shrinks when dry. That movement, plus our wet winters, is hard on a rigid concrete slab. Concrete is one big piece — when the ground shifts, it can't flex, so it cracks, and a cracked slab can't be fixed invisibly. Pavers are individual units set over a flexible base; the joints absorb ground movement, so pavers don't crack the way a slab does, and any section that settles can be lifted and reset. On a hillside or clay-heavy lot — which describes much of Oakland and Berkeley — that flexibility is a real long-term advantage.
Repairs and maintenance
Concrete is low day-to-day maintenance, but repairs are ugly — a cracked or stained slab usually means a visible patch or a full tear-out. With pavers, if one gets stained or damaged you pull that single unit and swap it, with no patch marks. Occasional joint re-sanding and a reseal every few years keeps them looking new.
Looks and resale value
Concrete has improved with stamping and coloring, but pavers still offer more colors, patterns, and textures — and that high-end, custom look. Because of appearance and durability, pavers generally add more resale value and curb appeal than a plain slab. For a front walkway or entry, that first impression matters.
So which should you choose?
Choose concrete if you're on a tight budget, the area is purely functional, or you want a clean modern slab and accept the crack risk over time. Choose pavers if you want the best long-term durability on East Bay clay soil, a repairable surface, a premium look, and stronger resale value. For most of our clients, pavers are worth the higher upfront cost because they hold up better to our soil and climate and still look great a decade later — but we always give a straight recommendation based on your specific yard.
