Low-voltage LED systems are virtually maintenance-free — but a couple of easy habits keep your lighting looking sharp and working perfectly year-round.
Clean fixtures and lenses once a season
East Bay fog deposits a fine film of mineral residue on fixture lenses over time, which subtly dims your lighting output. Every few months, wipe the lens of each fixture with a damp cloth. For brass fixtures, a light polish with a brass cleaner keeps them looking warm and intentional rather than weathered.
Check and replace LEDs as they dim
Quality LED landscape bulbs typically last 25,000–50,000 hours, but they do eventually dim before failing outright. If you notice a path light looking noticeably dimmer than its neighbors, swap the bulb — they're usually twist-lock replacements available online. Consistent brightness across a run of path lights makes the design look intentional and polished.
Update your timer as daylight shifts through the seasons
Sunset in Oakland ranges from around 5:00 PM in December to 8:30 PM in June. If your transformer uses a manual timer rather than a photocell (light sensor), update your ON time twice a year — when daylight saving time starts in March and ends in November — so your lights come on at dusk and don't run all night.
