Maintaining Your Wood Deck & Arbor
The East Bay's marine layer and seasonal rain cycles are tough on exposed wood. A simple annual routine keeps your deck beautiful and structurally sound for years.
Re-stain or reseal every 2–3 years
Oakland and Berkeley sit close enough to the bay that fog-laden air deposits moisture on wood surfaces nearly year-round. Untreated wood grays quickly and eventually cracks. Sand lightly and apply a quality penetrating oil stain or sealer every 2–3 years — sooner if water stops beading on the surface.
Check post bases for rot at the soil line
The most common failure point on any deck or arbor is the post base, where wood meets soil or concrete. Probe the bottom few inches of each post with a screwdriver once a year. Early rot is firm and discolored; advanced rot is soft and hollow. Catching it early saves the post; catching it late means replacing the whole structure.
Clear debris from between boards after rain
Leaves, seed pods, and organic debris pack between deck boards and stay wet long after rain, accelerating rot and staining. After each significant rain event in winter, run a putty knife or deck-cleaning tool between the boards to clear debris. It takes 10 minutes and meaningfully extends the deck's life.
Inspect fasteners and railings annually
Metal deck screws and joist hangers can corrode in our salt-air environment, especially within a mile of the bay. Tighten any loose screws, and replace any fastener showing heavy rust. Shake your railings — they should feel completely rigid. A loose railing in a hillside deck is a safety hazard.
