Getting the Most from Your Irrigation System

A smart irrigation system does most of the work for you — but a few seasonal checks keep it running efficiently and within EBMUD's watering guidelines.

    1

Adjust your schedule with the seasons

The single most impactful thing you can do is update your irrigation schedule four times a year. A setting that's right for August is far too much for October, and running it all winter is water wasted and money spent. Most smart controllers (like Rachio or Hunter Hydrawise) do this automatically based on local weather data — if yours doesn't, seasonal adjustments take about 5 minutes.

    2

Run in early morning to stay within water rules

EBMUD recommends irrigating before 9 AM to minimize evaporation and reduce the risk of fungal disease on plant foliage. During Stage restrictions, outdoor watering is typically restricted to specific days and times. Running early morning keeps you compliant and wastes far less water than midday or evening schedules.

    3

Walk your zones monthly and check for broken heads

Once a month during the dry season, manually run each zone for 2–3 minutes and walk it while it runs. Look for sprinkler heads spraying sideways (broken), drip emitters that aren't dripping (clogged), and puddles forming (a sign of a burst lateral line underground). Catching a broken head early prevents it from running unchecked for weeks.

    4

Winterize your system before the rainy season

In early November, turn off your irrigation controller's automatic schedule — not just the water supply. Running irrigation on top of winter rainfall wastes water and can drown drought-tolerant plants. If you have an automatic rain sensor, test it by simulating rain to ensure it's still interrupting the schedule correctly.
