Water smart during dry season
East Bay summers are harsh and dry. In the first two growing seasons after planting, water deeply 2–3 times per week in the morning before temperatures peak. Even drought-tolerant plants need support while establishing roots — once they're in, you can scale back significantly.
Mulch your beds to fight clay soil evaporation
Our area's heavy clay soil bakes into a crust in summer, repelling water instead of absorbing it. Spread 2–3 inches of wood chip or bark mulch over garden beds each spring to retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds before they get started.
Choose plants suited to EBMUD water stages
When EBMUD moves to Stage 1 or 2 water restrictions (which can happen in dry years), your garden shouldn't suffer if you've planted right. Prioritize California natives like toyon, coffeeberry, and manzanita, and Mediterranean plants like lavender and rosemary — they're designed for exactly this climate.
Let fog do some of the work in fall
From September onward, coastal fog deposits meaningful moisture on plant leaves overnight. You can often reduce irrigation frequency in fall and let nature bridge the gap before winter rains return. Watch the soil, not the calendar.
