Extending the Life of Your Fence
A quality wood fence in the East Bay can last 15–25 years with the right care. A few simple habits prevent the most common causes of early failure.
Seal the wood against moisture every few years
Our rainy winters and foggy summers keep wood fences wet for months at a time. Apply a penetrating wood sealer or water repellent every 2–4 years to prevent moisture from soaking into the grain, which causes swelling, warping, and eventual rot. Pay extra attention to end grain on post tops and board bottoms — this is where water enters most aggressively.
Oil and adjust gate hardware annually
Gate hardware — hinges, latches, and closers — corrodes in our salt-air environment and loosens with the constant movement of a daily-use gate. Every fall, apply a light machine oil or silicone spray to all moving parts, and tighten any loose screws. A gate that rubs against a post or drags on the ground puts stress on the entire fence structure.
Probe posts for rot at ground level
Post rot almost always starts where the post meets the soil, even when the visible portion looks fine. Once a year, press a screwdriver firmly into the base of each post just above and below ground level. Soft, spongy wood means rot is present. A single failed post can cause a fence section to lean or collapse — catching it early is a minor repair.
Keep plants and vines off the boards
Ivy, jasmine, and other climbing plants are popular in East Bay gardens, but letting them grow directly against fence boards traps moisture against the wood indefinitely. Keep a few inches of clearance, and trim any growth that leans against the fence after winter rains encourage rapid growth.
